WALRUS is a field screening aid for qualified HVAC/R technicians. It ranks pressure–temperature agreement only. It is not a refrigerant analyzer, laboratory test, safety system, or emergency service.
01What WALRUS does not determine
WALRUS does not establish refrigerant identity, composition, purity, contamination, non-condensable content, safety, cylinder condition, equipment compatibility, regulatory status, or suitability for any use. It does not authorize charging, transfer, recovery, recycling, reclamation, resale, disposal, venting, or release of refrigerant.
02Why a P–T result is limited
A single temperature and pressure observation has inherent ambiguity. Similar fluids can overlap; blends have bubble and dew behavior; and a cylinder may not be at equilibrium. The app cannot see air, moisture, oil, other refrigerants, or any other contamination. Its output is limited to agreement with bundled models for supported refrigerants.
03Use qualified judgment
Only trained and legally authorized personnel should handle refrigerants and pressurized cylinders. Use appropriate, maintained, and calibrated equipment. Follow all applicable laws and regulations, the cylinder and equipment instructions, the refrigerant manufacturer’s instructions, and the applicable safety data sheet (SDS). An ASHRAE safety classification is informational; it is not permission to handle a substance or a determination that conditions are safe.
04When not to rely on screening
Do not rely on WALRUS for emergency response, personal safety, leak response, fire or exposure decisions, or any decision where an incorrect result could cause injury, property damage, environmental harm, or regulatory noncompliance. Do not rely on it where the cylinder is damaged, contents are unknown or suspected mixed, conditions are not stabilized, instruments are unreliable, or the decision concerns purity, reclaim, resale, or reuse.
05Verification
Where cylinder contents, composition, or quality must be established, obtain verification through appropriate analytical methods and a qualified laboratory. AHRI Standard 700 is a recognized standard for refrigerant purity specifications and associated testing methods. The user remains responsible for deciding whether independent analysis or specialist advice is needed.
